Building Energy Standards

Vermont’s Building Energy Standards were established to set minimum efficiency requirements for new and renovated buildings. The standards are designed to provide more reductions in energy use and emissions over the life of a building, when compared with a similar building constructed prior to the standards going into effect.

Buildings that comply with the standards are generally more comfortable, healthy and cost-effective to heat and cool. They also help to advance the state’s goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Residential Building Energy Standards (RBES)

Vermont Residential Building Energy Standards (RBES) – 30 V.S.A. § 51 apply to all new homes and all additions, alterations and renovations to residential buildings three stories or less above grade.

By law, homeowners, contractors and architects involved in a qualifying residential construction project, must ensure RBES compliance. BUILD IT RIGHT. If you skip it – you risk: higher heating bills, poor indoor air quality and expensive repairs. Seasonal camps, unheated buildings, small renovation projects and some tiny homes, are exempt from compliance.

Protect your investment – build a home that’s warm, healthy and affordable for years to come. Contact Vermont’s Energy Code Assistance Center for more information.
